My Gray Stripes

Becoming whole through family life. Desserts help.

Bring on dessert

cranberry pieI play a bantering game called “Best Title” with my journalist daughter.  It starts informally when one of us gives a title to a random life experience as if it were a song or a book then the other completes the title with the perfect subtitle. Silly fun. When I formally started a blog, we were well-practiced title and sub-title makers.

My daughter and I also share a passion for desserts. While we may want to indulge more, we mostly talk about delicious treats. Sunday is our designated feast day when we absolutely, positively, must have dessert. Our favorite cold weather homemade dessert is pictured above: Crustless Cranberry Pie.

“Earned. Lessons learned. Bring on dessert” is the perfect subtitle for this blog. To date I’ve focused predominately on what I’ve earned and learned because that is the bulk of my experience. But a sprinkling of dessert is critical to my personal and family happiness. Christmas time is here, bring on Christmas cookies. Hard day at work, bring on a cannoli . Birthday celebration, bring on a birthday cake. Lost the big baseball game, bring on ice cream. Misunderstanding with spouse, bring me creme brulee!

And dessert can bring on wonderful surprises. When my daughter was fourteen, she insisted on making Crustless Cranberry Pie for her dad to bring to his office Christmas party potluck. At that time my husband Dave needed a letter of recommendation from a high level boss who was hard to pin down. This boss showed at the party for a few minutes and served himself the pie. He enjoyed it so much that he complimented the pie in his brief speech to those gathered, then tracked Dave down for the recipe. Dave agreed to swap the recipe for a recommendation. Deal done!

May God give you…
For every storm, a rainbow,
For every tear, a smile,
For every care, a promise,
And a blessing in each trial.
For every problem life sends,
A faithful friend to share,
For every sigh, a sweet song,
And an answer for each prayer.
~ Irish Prayer

And for every occasion, a delicious dessert.

Gray Stripe Earned: No matter what happens in life, there can be a sprinkling of dessert.
